Rat Girl

“You sure you haven’t got a name?”
“I lost it. I forgot it. I was a Rat”

Phillip Pullman

Rat Girl embodies the position of the underclass woman in society, Challenging the wider social systems which devalue and dehumanise, rendering us as less than human.

Confronting the systems that constrain us is symbolic act of reconstructing the self, and reclaiming our right to personhood.

I am drawn to materials that are often devalued or deemed worthless. My raw materials include photocopier prints, my body, duct tape, fragments of self, fabric scraps, and the contents of my recycling bin.
Just as a rat builds a nest, I created Rat Girl with anything I could scavenge, connecting to narratives of resilience, adaptation and survival.
